Question: What do we mean by 'prisoner of the past ', and how does it affect men?
Blethr: Good question. Let me think through this properly rather than just rattle off a list. ---
**At its core**, being a prisoner of the past means you're still living inside an old story. Something happened — could be years ago, could be decades — and part of you never quite left that moment. You're physically here, but emotionally you're still back there.
For men specifically, it tends to show up in a few ways:
**Identity locked in a former version of themselves.**
The bloke who was brilliant at football at 22 and still measures his worth against that. The man who had status at work and lost it, and can't find a new footing. The past self becomes the *real* self, and everything since feels like a pale copy.
**Unprocessed grievances.**
Things that were never talked through — a falling out, a betrayal, a loss — that just got buried. Men are often pretty good at burying things. Less good at knowing they've done it. Those buried things don't stay put. They leak out as anger, distance, low-level bitterness.
**Shame that never got aired.**
This one's big. Something a man did, or something done to him, that he never told anyone. Shame needs witness to dissolve. Without that, it just calcifies. --- The cruel irony is that men are often told to *move on* — which is different from *moving through*. Moving on skips the work. Moving through is harder, but it's the only thing that actually works.
